Maps are endgame areas generated by using a waystone on a specific map node on the Atlas. Maps contain randomized monsters and layouts but use a fixed tileset.
Mechanics
Revives
Each map gives the player a limited number of revives before the instance is closed off. On death, a revive will be used up and the player can resume at a checkpoint or outside of the map. The number of revives you have remaining is represented by the number of portals on the Map Device.
The number of revives available depend on the number of explicit modifiers on the waystone used to open the map. A waystone with 1 or no explicit mods allows for 5 revives, and each additional explicit modifier on the waystone after the first reduces it by 1. On a waystone with 6+ explicit modifiers, no revives will be available. The Stitched Flesh passive from Doryani's Science grants one additional revive.
Unlike PoE1, portals are not consumed whenever you enter or exit one. Players can enter an exit a map as many times as needed without consuming portals.
When running out of portals, a map is considered as failed and will update in the atlas as "Map Attempted". While the map node can be re-attempted with a new waystone, it will no longer have any of the additional encounters it originally had and all tablet slots for that map will be disabled. In addition, the map will have less item drops and 50% reduced experience gain. Once a map is completed, it cannot be reattempted.
In parties, each player has an independent number of revives. If players die during a map boss, the map instance owner must respawn the entire party to revive them.
Bosses
Every regular map opened by a waystone contains a unique map boss that players are required to defeat to successfully complete the area. Maps can also be home to a:
- Powerful Map Boss: Bosses that are more difficult, drop better rewards, and frequently drop Waystones one tier higher than used to open the area, up to tier 15.
- Deadly Map Boss: Specific Powerful Map Bosses that appear in specific Maps, are more difficult, and drop better rewards. These rewards are often accompanied by a specific item such as Unique Items or Lineage Supports. Can also drop items that grant access to Pinnacle Bosses.
Dying to the map's boss will cause the map to reset with no other enemies or encounters present. It's recommended to complete all other encounters on the map before fighting the boss.
Area level
While a map's area level is naturally determined by the tier of waystone used, from 65 at tier 1 to 79 at tier 15. it can be increased further:
- +1 from a Waystone (Tier 15)Waystone (Tier 15)Area Level: 79Waystone Tier: 15Can be used in a Map Device, allowing you to enter a Map. Waystones can only be used once. corrupted into a Waystone (Tier 16)Waystone (Tier 16)Area Level: 80Waystone Tier: 16CorruptedCan be used in a Map Device, allowing you to enter a Map. - +1 from a map that is Irradiated on the Atlas
- +1 from a map that is cleansed or corrupted on the Atlas and has the random modifier +1 to Monster Level of Area.
