The endgame story was altered in The Third Edict expansion and the removal of Cruel difficulty. In the initial Early Access release, at the end of Act 3 Cruel, the Vaal Cataclysm occurs and disables the time portal, leaving the player and Alva stranded in the Ziggurat Refuge in the past and working with Doryani to cleanse Corruption across Wraeclast so future generations can rebuild.
