Unique Items
A unique item is an item with a unique rarity, with a distinct and specific name, different artwork from the base item, and a predetermined list of modifiers. They can be identified by a distinct orange-brown banner on the item's tooltip,
Currently there are 450 released unique items in Path of Exile 2, including modifier variants.
This list does not include unique maps and strongboxes.
Mechanics
Unique items usually inherit the implicit modifiers of their base item if one exists.
Unique items generally provide one or more exclusive modifiers not available in the regular affix pool that can sometimes even enable completely new builds.
Most currency items that reforge, add, or remove modifiers do not work on unique items.

Obtaining unique items
The following is a non-exhaustive list of ways that unique items can be obtained.
- Global drops: Unique items can drop randomly from killed monsters or from chests and other environemental loot containers. They have different tiers of rarity that affect their drop rates. Additionally, their drop rates are influence by item rarity and item quantity.
- Orb of Chance: Global uniques can rarely be obtained by using an Orb of ChanceOrb of ChanceStack Size: 10Unpredictably either upgrades a Normal item to Unique rarity or destroys itRight click this item then left click a normal item to apply it. on a normal item.
- Gambling: Global uniques can sometimes be obtained when purchasing items from the Gambler.
- Ritual: Ritual altars will offer unique items or omens in exchange for tribute from sacrificed monsters.
- Nameless Seer: The Moment of Zen map contains the NPC Nameless Seer, who will allow you to take a free unique item from a selection. Elder Madox in the Kriar Peaks will also grant the same reward, once per character.
- Drop-restricted uniques: Certain unique items can be obtained deterministically from bosses or various game mechanics.
Unique items are classified within four distinct rarities or tiers: "Common", "Uncommon", "Rare", and "Mythic". When a unique item is generated, tier is determined first, then a unique item is chosen within that tier. Rarity increases the chance for an item to drop as unique, and as rarity increases, the relative chance for it to be a common unique will become lower, while the chance for it to be an uncommon, rare, or mythic unique will be higher.
Legacy variants
Like all items, when modifiers are updated between versions but existing items are not retroactively changed, unique items can have legacy variants. This means that for some uniques, there are better, worse, or completely different versions that can no longer be obtained outside of being traded for in permanent leagues.

This method will not add new modifiers or remove old modifiers.
Unique items designed by users
Prior to the release of Early Access for Path of Exile 2, several content creators/streamers received a "real-life" Valdo's Puzzle Box. Completing the puzzle revealed a key that could be redeemed on the official website for an opportunity to design either a unique item (10% chance) or a divination card (90% chance), assigned randomly. This reward can be redeemed some time after the release of Early Access, which involves a process of the user working with developers at Grinding Gear Games to design an item.

Strongboxes
Strongboxes are an encounter found in both the campaign and endgame. Strongboxes are a type of chest that can have modifiers. These chests may be crafted upon with currency items. When a strongbox is opened, a dark mist will flow out of them and summon packs of monsters. Once all the monsters are slain, the chest will open and drop its rewards.
Mechanics
Strongboxes can have most currency items applied to them to alter its modifiers. The modifiers on a strongbox will add or improve the items it drops or empower monsters within.
Rare Strongboxes can have up to 3 prefixes and suffixes by default. They can have up to 4 prefixes and suffixes after certain Atlas passives have been allocated. In addition, certain Atlas passives will enable certain modifiers to be able to be rolled on strongboxes.
Corrupting a strongbox with a Vaal OrbVaal OrbStack Size: 20Modifies an item unpredictably and Corrupts itRight click this item then left click an item to corrupt it. Corrupted items cannot be modified again. results in all items being Corrupted.
Certain mechanics may allow a strongbox to be openable again. To do so, the player must hold the left click button down on the strongbox.
The loot from strongboxes is not affected by rarity modifiers from your gear, though they are affected by strongbox-specific modifiers. Strongboxes innately gain 50% more item quantity and rarity starting from Act 4[confirmation needed], and 100% more in endgame.

Rogue Exiles
Rogue exiles are a special type of monsters. Wandering around Wraeclast, these hostile exiles seek out a fight to the death. Rogue exiles start appearing in Act 4 of the campaign and have an ~8% chance to appear in maps.
Mechanics
Rogue exiles are Unique monsters based on playable characters and can use player skills, including Dodge Roll. They use a more advanced AI than other monsters with smart targeting and smart pathfinding. They can also use life flasks to heal themselves mid-combat.
Rogue exiles come equipped with their own set of equipment, which can occasionally include drop-enabled unique items, and stats from these items will affect the rogue exile. They may use items with socketed augments which are retained when dropped. Any unique items they carry will be displayed under their modifiers. When defeated, rogue exiles will drop all the equipment they were carrying. If you are defeated by a rogue exile, they will open a Town Portal and leave the area.
A Rogue exile captured in a Ritual generates new equipment each time they are respawned, including unique items.
Rogue exiles that spawn near abysses will respawn as a Lichborn Exile when killed, imbuing them with additional abilities and Abyssal modifiers. Their name will display as "<Rogue Exile's name>, the Lich Born". Breach Drops
Breach is a type of map encounter. Breaches are tears in reality that summon Hiveborn monsters from another dimension.
Mechanics
Initially, only Unstable Breaches can be found in the wild. Inside a Breach Fortress, you can also find Breach Hive encounters, and larger Hive Fortress encounters near the center of the fortress. Certain Atlas passives can cause Breach Hives to appear in maps outside of Breach Fortresses.
Unstable Breaches
Unstable Breaches appear as purple hands emanating energy. When touched, the Breach will begin to expand and summon Hiveborn monsters. Hiveborn monsters are confined within the Breach circle.
When an Unstable Breach is opened, a meter will appear indicating the encounter status, shown as a two overlapping bars. Your goal is to fill up the lighter bar by killing Hiveborn monsters before the brighter section fills up that bar and collapse the Breach prematurely. If you manage the completely fill the bar, when the brighter section fills up the meter, the Breach will become stabilised and summon more Rare Hiveborn monsters. Once all the Rare monsters have been killed, the Breach will collapse and end the encounter.
Occasionally, after killing all the Rare monsters, the Breach may summon Vruun, Marshall of Xesht instead of collapsing. If this happens, the Breach will collapse after Vruun is killed.
Once the Breach encounter ends, whether prematurely or not, it will drop items from the Breach encounter at the player's location.
Breach Hive
Breach Hives are large stabilised Breaches surrounded by organic walls. When you approach these walls, they will burn away. There are also numerous fissures that burst and burn away walls in a large area, which can detonate nearby fissures to create a chain reaction. At the center of the Breach Hive, there will be a button that lets you summon Ailith and begin the mission where you need to protect Ailith from waves of Hiveborn enemies until she can perform a ritual to destroy the Breach Hive.
Ailith's health is split into sections, and the amount of damage she takes depends on the power of the enemy that hits her. If Ailith's health is fully depleted, the encounter is failed. Once the encounter begins, walking near the walls will no longer destroy them, but some walls will be randomly destroyed as the waves progress.
When starting the encounter, multiple purple flames will spawn near Ailith, which can be activated to unleash various abilities to help defend her:
- Heal Ailith: Restores some of Ailith's health bar.
- Give Ailith a Shield: Protects Ailith from taking damage for a duration.
- Gain an Enhanced Flame: Grants a buff to your character that deals significant damage over time to nearby enemies and destroy nearby walls.
- Create a Wall of the Dreamer's Flame: Creates a long purple flame wall that deals significant damage over time enemies it touches.
- Freeze and Hinder the Hiveborn: Temporarily inflicts nearby Hiveborn with Freeze and Hinder over a large area.
- Bombard the Hiveborn: Summons a hail of meteors to attack the Hiveborn, dealing area damage for a long duration.
Hive Fortress
Hive Fortresses are special maps near the Hive Colony that contains a gigantic Hiveborn structure. Inside the Hive Fortress are multiple Hiveborn monsters and several "Grasping Coffers" chests, which have a small chance to contain wombgifts. You will need to make your way into the center of fortress to start the encounter.
Hive Fortress encounters work like their smaller Breach Hive counterparts, but with more waves. In addition, more purple flames will spawn between waves. Up to 6 flames can be held at a time, so it's recommended to use them liberally.
In addition to purple flame skills found in regular Hive encounters, there are skills specific to fortresses:
- Destroy the Hive walls around Ailith: Optionally destroys the walls that funnel monsters towards Ailith. This skill is removed if not used by wave 4.
These require certain Atlas passives or Breachstone modifiers to use:
- Spawn Magic Monsters: Spawns an additional pack of magic monsters and adds 2 packs of magic monsters to future waves.
- Spawn It That Was Tul and It That Was Esh: Spawns the pair of Breach bosses.
- Increase Monster Potency: Increases Breach monster effectiveness.
- Creates a zone that upgrades Monster Rarity: Creates a field effect around Ailith that upgrades the rarity of monsters that enter it.
- Spawns an additional Pack with a Rare Monster at the start of each wave
- Spawns 2 additional Packs of Magic Monsters at the start of each wave
Once all the waves have been completed, you will need to escape the Hive Fortress. Several passageways will be blocked off as you leave, and the core will release a map-wide pulse of energy that deals some damage. These waves will not cause you to become heavy stunned while sprinting. Once you leave the Fortress, the map is completed and all rewards from the encounter will drop.
