Precursor tablets (or just Tablets) are items that add additional map mechanic encounters to maps. They can be placed in the Map Device along with the waystone to add its effect to the opened map. Tablets have a limited number of uses before they are consumed, indicated on its implicit modifier.
Mechanics
The number of tablets you can use for a map depends on the number of affixes on the waystone: 1 with 1-2 waystone modifiers, 2 with 3-5 waystone modifiers, and 3 with 6+ waystone modifiers. Tablets cannot be used in map areas that have already been opened or in unique maps. A fourth tablet can be used in City maps if Industrial Improvements has been allocated.
Multiple copies of the same type of tablet can be used, which will increase the number of times the encounter will appear on the map or increase the size or density of the encounter for ones that can only spawn once. The exact effects depend on the mechanic.
Each unused tablet slot (empty or locked slots) adds a chance for other encounters that can be added with tablets to appear on the map. This means that with all tablet slots filled and active, other encounter mechanics that can be added with tablets will not spawn. Irradiated and Overseer Tablets count as a wild card (unfilled) for encounter spawns.
By default, tablets can normally drop as normal, magic, or unique rarity, and cannot be upgraded into a rare item. The Atlas passive skills Reverse Transcription and Partial Translation will unlock the ability to upgrade a tablet into rare rarity (e.g. via a Regal OrbRegal OrbStack Size: 20Upgrades a Magic item to a Rare item, adding 1 modifierRight click this item then left click a magic item to apply it. Current modifiers are retained and a new one is added.) and increase its maximum explicit modifier limit by one; rare tablets can have up to a maximum of 4 modifiers with both passives.
