Expedition
Expedition is a type of encounter. An Expedition encounter will task the player with placing a chain of explosives over a Kalguuran burial site to unearth lost artifacts and monsters.
Using an Expedition Logbook, you can chart out islands to the ocean to find new areas to perform more Expeditions, including larger Grand Expeditions.
Expedition has been temporarily disabled in permanent leagues for the duration of Runes of Aldur league.
Encounter
In maps containing an Expedition encounter, you will find a a detonator surrounded by multiple markers and remnants. The player will be given a limited number of explosives to place down. The explosives must be placed within a certain distance from the detonator or the previously placed explosive. Each explosive will have a radius indicated with a green circle which shows what markers come under its effect. After planting the explosives, the player may press the detonator to start the chain of explosives, unearthing different things at various markers in the vicinity of the explosions. Once most of the monsters that was summoned by the explosion is killed, the next explosive in the chain will be detonated.
There are four Markers that indicate three possible interactions to occur during the explosion:
- Chests: Markers with the Triskelion banner unearth chests that contain random items. The rarity of the chest is indicated by the color of the associated marker.
- Monsters: Monster markers, indicated with a double red flag, unearth monsters. The size of the marker indicates their rarity.
- Remnants: Large chunks of Verisium inscribed with runes. When detonated, remnants summons waves of monsters empowered by runes.
In high tier maps with Face the Past allocated, Expedition encounters have a chance to spawn an an underground area called the Tomb of the Fallen Knight. The area contains the boss Styrn, Fallen Knight of Aldur.
Remnants
Remnants empower monsters unearthed by the explosion and in subsequent explosions. Before detonating a remnant, they must be inscribed with runes to form a runeshape combination, the available options depending on the number of slots and the rune that's already been inscribed to it; if detonated without choosing a runeshape combination, it will select one randomly. Each inscribed rune adds an additional effect to unearthed monsters, and the specific runeshape combination determines the reward that can be collected from the remnant once all the monsters it summons has been killed.
Once detonated, the remnant will summon waves of monsters, the number of which depending on the length of the runeshape combination. The summoned monsters will be empowered by the runes on the remnant, gaining more of its runes after each wave. Once all waves have been cleared, the remnant can be shattered to collect its rewards. The remnant will drop a specific reward determined by its runeshape combination.
Each detonated remnant will apply the effects of a random rune in its runeshape combination to monsters unearthed by subsequent explosions.
Rune empowered monsters can drop currencies used for Runeforging.

Along with the usual markers from regular Expeditions, they will contain additional interactables that can be blown up summon special monsters, modify subsequent explosions, or reveal hidden areas. The map is complete once all the monsters from the explosions have been killed.
Locations
Underground areas contain additional loot. They are marked on the map with icons and have to be destroyed with explosives like remnants.

Maps
Maps are endgame areas generated by using a waystone on a specific map node on the Atlas. Maps contain randomized monsters and layouts but use a fixed tileset.
Mechanics
Revives
Each map gives the player a limited number of revives before the instance is closed off. On death, a revive will be used up and the player can resume at a checkpoint or outside of the map. The number of revives you have remaining is represented by the number of portals on the Map Device.
The number of revives available depend on the number of explicit modifiers on the waystone used to open the map. A waystone with 1 or no explicit mods allows for 5 revives, and each additional explicit modifier on the waystone after the first reduces it by 1. On a waystone with 6+ explicit modifiers, no revives will be available. The Stitched Flesh passive from Doryani's Science grants one additional revive.
Unlike PoE1, portals are not consumed whenever you enter or exit one. Players can enter an exit a map as many times as needed without consuming portals.
When running out of portals, a map is considered as failed and will update in the atlas as "Map Attempted". While the map node can be re-attempted with a new waystone, it will no longer have any of the additional encounters it originally had and all tablet slots for that map will be disabled. In addition, the map will have less item drops and 50% reduced experience gain. Once a map is completed, it cannot be reattempted.
In parties, each player has an independent number of revives. If players die during a map boss, the map instance owner must respawn the entire party to revive them.
Bosses
Every regular map opened by a waystone contains a unique map boss that players are required to defeat to successfully complete the area. Maps can also be home to a:
- Powerful Map Boss: Bosses that are more difficult, drop better rewards, and frequently drop Waystones one tier higher than used to open the area, up to tier 15.
- Deadly Map Boss: Specific Powerful Map Bosses that appear in specific Maps, are more difficult, and drop better rewards. These rewards are often accompanied by a specific item such as Unique Items or Lineage Supports. Can also drop items that grant access to Pinnacle Bosses.
Dying to the map's boss will cause the map to reset with no other enemies or encounters present. It's recommended to complete all other encounters on the map before fighting the boss.
Area level
While a map's area level is naturally determined by the tier of waystone used, from 65 at tier 1 to 79 at tier 15. it can be increased further:
- +1 from a Waystone (Tier 15)Waystone (Tier 15)Area Level: 79Waystone Tier: 15Can be used in a Map Device, allowing you to enter a Map. Waystones
Waystones are items that can be activated in the Map Device to access maps on the Atlas.
Crafting
Waystones are craftable items that can naturally have up to 6 modifiers (3 prefixes and 3 suffixes) and can be of normal, magic, and rare rarities. Once the waystone is used in the map device, the modifiers rolled on it are added to the map as area modifiers. Modifiers make maps more difficult and rewarding. The number of revives available for the opened map decreases with the number of explicit modifiers on the waystone, going from 6 with no mods down to 0 with 6+ explicit mods.
