Atlas of Worlds
Rituals are a type of encounter. Rituals are mysterious sacrificial sites built by the The King in the Mists.
A preview of the Ritual mechanic is found in campaign, in the Act 1 areas Hunting Grounds and Freythorn.
Mechanics
Zones containing a Ritual encounter spawn 3 or 4 Ritual altars. Ritual altars can be activated once most of the monsters surrounding the altar are killed. Activating a Ritual altar will enclose the area in darkness, preventing the player from leaving, and begins reviving monsters killed within the Ritual circle. The altar also empowers the monsters or unleashes various attacks depending on its type. Each zone will only contain one type of altar. The encounter will end once all revived monsters have been slain or if the player dies.
Killing monsters within the circle will grant tribute. The amount of tribute earned from killing the monsters during the encounter depends on the monster's rarity, as well as how many times it has appeared in a ritual in that area; it will provide 25% less tribute each time it is revived. One of the options in the atlas keystone Invigorated Sacrifices reduces the penalty by 50%, but with the tradeoff of increasing monster toughness and damage.
After a ritual altar is complete, tribute earned can be spent at the altar for rewards. A swarm of locusts will fly out of completed Ritual altars that point in the direction of the nearest incomplete Ritual altar.
The encounter will be marked as completed once all Ritual altars have been found.
It is possible to "drag" monsters (e.g. Rogue Exiles) into the Ritual area before killing them to cause them to be resurrected during the ritual encounter. Similarly, monsters that move out of the area before dying will not be resurrected.
Ritual rewards
The reward screen offers a selection of favours for purchase, in exchange for tribute. Rituals will offer a variety of Omens or unique items to be purchased. You can also pay tribute to reroll the offered items, up to once by default.
Items on offer can be deferred, paying 10% of its cost plus an additional fee to have it appear in future Ritual encounters with a reduced price. A deferred item may go up in price if it is not deferred again the next time it shows up. If the item remains undeferred too many times, you will receive a warning that it will be removed from the deferral pool if you do not defer it again.
Any unspent tribute can be offered by pressing the "Offer Tribute to the King" button in the bottom, which fills up a bar that indicates the amount of tribute needed to gain An Audience with the KingAn Audience with the KingOn the edge of existence, he watches with ire.Required to reveal the Crux of Nothingness on the Atlas., which is used to find and challenge the King in the Mists. This option does not appear if the current area is part of a Rite of the Nameless.
The rewards are split into three groups, with each group revealed after completing one of the rituals in the map. The rewards are sorted based on price, so the last group revealed contains the most expensive items.
Each item rewarded by ritual is grouped into a tier, and will always cost a similar amount.

Rite of the Nameless
After defeating the King in the Mists, the Head of the KingHead of the KingTo bear the head of a king is to send amessage both concise and profound.Bring this proof of your victory to Aoife in Caer Tarth. can be taken to Caer Tarth to begin the Rite of the Nameless. You will then select five (six if the Ongoing Chants atlas notable is allocated) connected maps in sequence for where the Rite will take place. While selecting the maps, each map will also offer an additional reward to be gained from Ritual encounter in that map:
- Foretold Bounty: Adds a specified item on the first Ritual offer.
- Foretold Proliferation: Applies a modifier to all other maps on the Rite of the Nameless after completing the map.
Maps that are part of the Rite will always contain a Ritual altar holding the map boss. The boss must be slain in order for the Rite to continue. The next Ritual encounter in the Rite will summon all the map bosses that have been previously slain in the final Ritual altar. The maps do not need to be completed in the order it was selected. Only one instance of the Rite of the Nameless can be active at a time. Using an additional Head of the King will remove the encounter from maps which already have it active.
Rituals in the Rite of the Nameless cannot have its tribute be offered towards An Audience With the King. Each Ritual you encounter you complete in the Rite will grant an additional reroll to all future Rituals in the Rite.
Each Ritual encounter you complete in the Rite will earn you an effigy piece. Five of these effigy pieces can be placed in the effigy in Caer Tarth to access the Ritual pinnacle boss, The Bodach.
Ritual variations
All Ritual altars in an area share the same Ritual variation. They can create environmental hazards or provide buffs or debuffs.

Maps
Maps are endgame areas generated by using a waystone on a specific map node on the Atlas. Maps contain randomized monsters and layouts but use a fixed tileset.
Mechanics
Revives
Each map gives the player a limited number of revives before the instance is closed off. On death, a revive will be used up and the player can resume at a checkpoint or outside of the map. The number of revives you have remaining is represented by the number of portals on the Map Device.
The number of revives available depend on the number of explicit modifiers on the waystone used to open the map. A waystone with 1 or no explicit mods allows for 5 revives, and each additional explicit modifier on the waystone after the first reduces it by 1. On a waystone with 6+ explicit modifiers, no revives will be available. The Stitched Flesh passive from Doryani's Science grants one additional revive.
Unlike PoE1, portals are not consumed whenever you enter or exit one. Players can enter an exit a map as many times as needed without consuming portals.
When running out of portals, a map is considered as failed and will update in the atlas as "Map Attempted". While the map node can be re-attempted with a new waystone, it will no longer have any of the additional encounters it originally had and all tablet slots for that map will be disabled. In addition, the map will have less item drops and 50% reduced experience gain. Once a map is completed, it cannot be reattempted.
In parties, each player has an independent number of revives. If players die during a map boss, the map instance owner must respawn the entire party to revive them.
Bosses
Every regular map opened by a waystone contains a unique map boss that players are required to defeat to successfully complete the area. Maps can also be home to a:
- Powerful Map Boss: Bosses that are more difficult, drop better rewards, and frequently drop Waystones one tier higher than used to open the area, up to tier 15.
- Deadly Map Boss: Specific Powerful Map Bosses that appear in specific Maps, are more difficult, and drop better rewards. These rewards are often accompanied by a specific item such as Unique Items or Lineage Supports. Can also drop items that grant access to Pinnacle Bosses.
Dying to the map's boss will cause the map to reset with no other enemies or encounters present. It's recommended to complete all other encounters on the map before fighting the boss.
Area level
While a map's area level is naturally determined by the tier of waystone used, from 65 at tier 1 to 79 at tier 15. it can be increased further:
- +1 from a Waystone (Tier 15)Waystone (Tier 15)Area Level: 79Waystone Tier: 15Can be used in a Map Device, allowing you to enter a Map. Waystones & Mods
Waystones are items that can be activated in the Map Device to access maps on the Atlas.
Crafting
Waystones are craftable items that can naturally have up to 6 modifiers (3 prefixes and 3 suffixes) and can be of normal, magic, and rare rarities. Once the waystone is used in the map device, the modifiers rolled on it are added to the map as area modifiers. Modifiers make maps more difficult and rewarding. The number of revives available for the opened map decreases with the number of explicit modifiers on the waystone, going from 6 with no mods down to 0 with 6+ explicit mods.
